Jan Škrdlík – Variations on Tzara • The Son-of-a-Narcissist-Mother’s Guide Book
Variations on Tzara is a verse novel written in the style of new suprarealism, a poetic language that weaves together the material, psychological, and spiritual dimensions into one continuous voice. Each poem begins with a line from Tristan Tzara’s L’Homme approximatif, yet the text develops its own narrative rhythm — part visionary chant, part existential diary, part score for the ear and the eye.
The work unfolds as a pilgrimage through landscapes both real and imagined, where every image resonates in multiple registers. Radiance often conceals its opposite: dazzling beauty carries within itself a quiet warning. Early in the sequence, the motif of the “pubescent oaks (those with silken leaves)” appears — at once a natural detail and a symbol of immaturity. It foreshadows the later existential rupture, when rapture turns into the cry “Ripeness!???”, and the journey confronts the inevitability of transformation.
As such, Variations on Tzara is both a meditation on truth and illusion, and a lyrical experiment in form: a living score where language itself becomes the stage on which the drama of ripening unfolds.

| 2016 – 2024 |
The work crystallized starting in 2016. However, I wrote the vast majority of the poems during the first three months of 2020. The creation of the English version by the translation team of Thomas McComb between 2020 and 2024 inspired me to make further changes and additions, so the presented version of the novel dates to 2025.

| ← Excerpts from the Spanish version of “Variations on Tzara”. This version began to take shape immediately after the Czech edition was completed. However, it is not a translation of the “original Czech.” The collection lives its own life in this new language. Some of the verses differ from the Czech version—just as the living Spanish language naturally leads them to. I can afford this freedom. After all, I’m the author. :-)
In fact, since 2016, when the foundations of this work were laid, I’ve written some poems in both languages, although most of the collection was originally recorded in Czech.
